Quickie Book Review – Vampire Sun by J.R. Rain (Samantha Moon series)

Vampire Sun (Vampire for Hire, #9)Vampire Sun by J.R. Rain

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This series could only be better if Rain could manage to put out a new book every week or so, then I’d be happy. Who wouldn’t love a series about a Vamp mom with mystical qualities, a champion of the underdog, and she who flies on big black wings whenever her heart desires?

Seriously Rain, give me the next one S.T.A.T!

Quickie Book Review – Witch Hunt by S.M. Reine

Witch Hunt (Preternatural Affairs, #1)Witch Hunt by S.M. Reine

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have a few authors now that, depending on what genre I’m in the mood for, I will pick up and read without even scanning the blurb or reviews. S.M. Reine has quickly become one of my go-to authors when I’m in the mood for some kick-arse paranormal/ urban fantasy escapism.

This book met my expectations and then some. I also loved how this book had a little cross over with the Tarot Witches series (hope I’m remembering that series name right– I just read the first book in that series not too long ago.) Anyway, read it.

Quickie Book Review – Complicated Girl by Mimi Strong

Complicated GirlComplicated Girl by Mimi Strong

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Adore this book! Loved Meanie and all of her quirky issues. Mimi Strong has done it again with this series. Her humor, insights into human nature, and her ability to knit together a fabulous cast of characters has made Strong my go-to author these days. I would literally pick up anything by her, even a dystopian novel about space rabies.

Quickie Book Review Set – Claimed By The Alphas Series by Viola Rivard

Claimed by the AlphasClaimed by the Alphas by Viola Rivard

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Love this compelling, spicy series. What strikes me as most interesting about it (other than the scorching heat level and the menage, of course) is that the author has done an excellent job building a world where the plot seems possible and naturally evolving. There are details, sparsely planted throughout this and the other books in the series, that lend to the overall refreshing story line.

I don’t want to give too much away, and I’ve got four more books in the series to review… but the fact that I read them all back to back and had to download one as soon as I was done with the last one should speak volumes!

Claimed by the Alphas: Part TwoClaimed by the Alphas: Part Two by Viola Rivard

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Spicy, steamy, complex and satisfying. This second book in the Claimed by the Alphas series, is all that and more. The tension and heat keeps ratcheting skyward, the characters are evolving and revealing their personalities, and I found myself tearing through this book just to get to the next one.

Love, love, love this series! Onward to the next book!

Claimed by the Alphas: Part FourClaimed by the Alphas: Part Four by Viola Rivard

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Goodness, this series is taking me on a ride. I adore the characters and the care that the author has taken in developing such a fabulous world for this series. The writing itself ain’t too shabby either 🙂

I’m not sure what to expect with the next book, and that’s half the fun of it. I devoured the first four books as I can’t wait for the next one to come out. It better be soon… I need my Alphas fix!

Quickie Book Review – Playing with Fire by C.J. Archer

Playing With Fire (Freak House #2)Playing With Fire by C.J. Archer

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ms. Archer sure does have a way of setting the page alight with heat and chemistry… and she came up with an ingenious way to keep the two lovebirds apart for the time being. Add in a cast of complex characters, a few Big Bad’s and a rich, historical setting and you have the makings of a great series. I also like how this series blends the scientific with the fantastical, in a way that makes everything seem plausible.

I’m just as satisfied after reading this book (#2 in the series) as I was after putting down the first one. Can’t wait to read the next installment!

(P.S – Sorry we’ve been AWOL, there’s just been so much going on lately. Will try to do a post about our craziness soon!)

Quickie Book Review – One More Body by Josh Stallings

One More BodyOne More Body by Josh Stallings

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Flabbergasted. Sated. Speechless. Once again, I am in awe of the tale spun by the Josh Stallings in this third (and final?) book of this series. The man is a flipping genius. The kind of genius that other writers would kill to be.

I finished it yesterday, and my brain is still processing it all. I feel like one of those characters at the end of a high-stakes, gritty action movie– walking away bloody and gimpy, with rubble and destruction settling behind me. I feel victorious, heroic and tarnished. I’m pretty sure this is one book that I fell into, lived and breathed. It, and the first two books in the series, have changed me at the molecular level. I’m wearing the battle scars proudly, right along side of Moses and Freedom and the rest of the colorful cast of characters.

I could yammer on about Stallings’ ability to write vivid, action-packed scenes. Or his way of cutting down to the root of humanity’s cancerous underbelly, his minimalistic (and poetic) descriptions, or even his way of flavoring a story with spices from all walks of life. But I won’t– you’ll just have to read it for yourself.

There was one quote I want to leave you with, from near the end of One More Body:
“They say time heals all wounds. Bullsh*t. Time just gives you enough scar tissue to make it bearable.”

Yes, yes it does, Moses.

Quickie Book Review – Moon River (Vampire for Hire series) by J.R. Rain

Moon River (Vampire for Hire, #8)Moon River by J.R. Rain

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I think this series just keeps getting better and better! (The opposite of what usually happens once a series gets to this point.) Samantha, as usual, is up to her fangs in a conundrum involving the safety of those she loves… and that ending– Oy! What a scene. And then there’s Fang– poor misguided, dangerous Fang. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll just say I’m anxiously awaiting the next book!

Quickie Book Review – Hunters & Prey by Katie Salidas

Hunters & Prey (Immortalis, #2)Hunters & Prey by Katie Salidas

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Really like this book! Having read the first novel in the series, I can say that the characters are ever-evolving and feel very fleshed-out. There was plenty of action in the Fanged tale, but we also get to watch as Alyssa wrestles with some fairly heavy moral struggles. Can’t wait to read the next one!

Quickie Book Review – Starlight by Mimi Strong (Peaches Monroe #2)

Starlight (Peaches Monroe, #2)Starlight by Mimi Strong

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I’ve literally started this review several times, because I want to find the perfect words to describe how I feel about this book (and the Peaches Monroe series in general). Amazeballs. Fan-flipping-tastic. Unforgettably witty and sassy. Pitch Perfect.

Funnier than a well-placed punch in the… well, never mind.

Hotter than a private party with Eric Northman, Christian Grey and that Magic Mike guy 🙂 And maybe a little Jax Teller for dessert.

Peaches & Dalton. Peaches & Keith. (And Mitchell! Lurve him, yes I do!)

Since I’ve irritated even myself with this review, you’ll just have to go read the book(s). And if you don’t love Peaches Monroe as much as I do… well, then you just suck 🙂

Quickie Book Review – Moon Island by J.R. Rain

Moon Island (Vampire for Hire, #7)Moon Island by J.R. Rain

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another good installment of The Vampire for Hire (a.k.a Samantha Moon) series. Things seem to be escalating, and the major “problem/ case” of this novel was done quite well. I’m getting goose flesh just thinking about it now!

And another bit of great news… the next book comes out in a manner of days!

Quickie Book Review – Harvest Moon by Krista D. Ball

Harvest MoonHarvest Moon by Krista D. Ball

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I adored many things about this novella, from the way the author approached the mystic elements, to how she handled the gender-bending moments and fully-fleshed characterization. I’ll certainly read more by the author in the future!
