Quickie Book Review – Where There’s Smoke by Jodi Picoult

Where There's SmokeWhere There’s Smoke by Jodi Picoult

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Interesting short read… I’m a huge fan of Picoult’s, but I wasn’t completely won over by this novella. It needed more, ending at a place where nothing felt resolved and everything is still up in the air. Hopefully, it’s supposed to be a precursor to a full-length novel or something.

On a side note, I did like how the otherworldly elements were worked into this story– something I’m not used to reading with this author. I’d read more of the story for sure, if anything else comes out.

Quickie Book Review – The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon

The Winter PeopleThe Winter People by Jennifer McMahon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fabulously creepy and morose. Bits of this novel remind me of one of the stories in Full Dark, No Stars (Stephen King) because it’s similar in tone, creep-factor and historical aspects. So, that alone should tell you to read this, or course.

The story spans decades and involved a host of characters who all end up connected in one way or another by the end. I don’t want to give too much away, but the legend and lore involved in this was pitch-perfect and I loved how the mood built over the course of the story. McMahon may have just become one of my favorite contemporary authors with this one. It’s not to be missed!

Finding Magic (Downside Ghost # 0.5 Novella) by Stacia Kane – Review

Finding Magic (Downside Ghosts, #0.5)Finding Magic by Stacia Kane

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

First, I have to admit that I’ve only read book three in this series, so I was glad to receive an ARC from Netgalley for this novella, since it technically occurs prior to book one.

I was glad to see a little deeper into the neurosis of the main character Chess, and to get to know her a little before her pill dependency really kicks in. And seeing how her training ended up taking her to the career choice as a Ghost Debunker. As usual, the writing is phenomenal and the world-building first class, even if the “amount” shown in this novella is condensed due to the format.

If you haven’t read the Downside Ghost series, start here, then proceed on. If you are a paranormal fan, who appreciates a little risk taking and originality, then you won’t be sorry!

Book Review – Sacrificial Magic by Stacia Kane

Sacrificial Magic (Downside Ghosts, #4)Sacrificial Magic by Stacia Kane

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I usually hate to start mid-series, but I received a review copy of Sacrificial Magical through Net Galley, and since my TBR pile is substantial I just didn’t have the time to go back and read the first three books in this series first.

Given that a lot of the back story was unknown to me, I was still bowled over by this novel. I never (in a million years) thought that I’d not only finish, but thoroughly enjoy, reading a dark novel centered around a pill-popping, damaged heroine. A woman who banishes ghosts for The Church in a post-apocolyptic landscape, hangs out with thugs and has a less-than rosy outlook on life.

But color me wrong. This book, I loved. Probably enough to go back and read the first books in the series, even though I’ll be going backwards in time!
