Quickie Book Review – A Modern Witch by Debora Geary

A Modern Witch (A Modern Witch, #1)A Modern Witch by Debora Geary

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I read this novel a while ago, but recently came back to the series and read the whole lot of them in just a handful of days. Aside from this series being one of the most innovative (combining tech-now with the older witchy traditions) it is also one of the most life-affirming, uplifting series that I’ve ever had the pleasure to read.

The author’s love for her characters comes through loud and clear, as evidenced by the amount of thought and care she put into breathing life into them, holding their hands through tough times, and laughing with them over nutella cookies and ice cream. Start here, then read all 7 books in the main series, but don’t forget the spin-off series as well!

Trust me, you’ll feel like a better person after living among the people of Witch Central for over a dozen book’s worth!

Fun, quirky paranormal with great characters, a heaping-helping of intrigue and some light romance. I have read other books by Cantwell, and I always enjoy her sense of humor and characterizations– this book being no different. Recommended!

Quickie Book Review – The Best of Us by Sarah Pekkanen

The Best of UsThe Best of Us by Sarah Pekkanen

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was a change of pace for me, because I’ve gotten used to reading novels with action-based paranormal themes. And this was not one of those books.

While there is an over-all story arc, the journey of the characters is more important than the final outcome, in my opinion. Each is flawed, troubled by one thing or another, and comes baring baggage. Throw them into close proximity and drama is bound to happen. And happen, it does.

This novel is compelling, well-written and exacting in the way that Pekkanen explores these characters, exposing the good with the bad. I liked the tone and intricacies in this novel, and I’ll be sure to check out other works from this author in the future!

Quickie Book Review – Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover

Losing Hope (Hopeless, #2)Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

(Insert contented sigh here, please)

I loved reading Hopeless, so I knew I was probably going to like Losing Hope as well. But I was wrong. I didn’t just like it– I fell into it, loved it, and was sad to see it end.

I don’t know if I felt so completely sucked into it because I already knew parts of the story (but not nearly as much as I thought I would, having read the first book) or if Holder is just that damaged of a character and therefore I was compelled to pull him into my arms and make his pain go away.

I can barely compose my thoughts for feeling so strongly about how fantastic this book is. Maybe a string of adjectives will suffice: witty, intense, heart-string-tugging, raw, hopeful, tragic, redemptive, healing, powerful, well-written, emotional, uplifting…

Enough. Just read it!

Hot New Release – We Are Made of Stardust (Peaches Monroe #1) by Mimi Strong

Check out this hot new release by Bestselling author Mimi Strong! I’ve seen Mimi around a few writer’s boards and on Facebook, etc. and she’s such a fabulous person. That, and a kick-ass writer too!

Blurb:

She’s a sassy bookstore manager, he’s a famous actor. This Notting Hill-inspired New Adult romance is outrageous, funny, and full of sex, sex, sex.

Peaches Monroe, age 22, is a plus-sized beauty who spends quiet days with books, in the small town of Beaverdale, Washington.

One Saturday afternoon, she’s balancing precariously on a chair, in a bridesmaid dress, when a handsome dark-haired man comes running into the bookstore. He knocks Peaches over, she lands in his muscular arms, they lock gazes, and …

She recognizes him.

As the sexy vampire heartthrob she watches on TV every week.

Peaches and Dalton Deangelo are completely wrong for each other. He’s only in town temporarily, working on an indie movie. She should stay away before she gets burned. He should stay away, too, before he opens up and shares all his secrets.

But they’re drawn to each other. Dalton claims it’s because they’re made from the same stardust. He says a lot of dramatic things, but it’s his carbohydrate-free perfect body and sexy touch that turns Peaches to Jell-O.

Will they be able to make it as a couple? How can a hot, famous actor like Dalton Deangelo be interested in a regular girl, much less a big girl, like Peaches Monroe? What’s the press going to say when they find out?

Genre: NEW ADULT ROMANCE / Contemporary Romance / Erotic Romance / Ages 17+

**WARNING: This book is chock-full of enthusiastic sex, ranging from OH-NO-SHE-DIDN’T awkward to I-NEED-A-SHOWER-NOW hot. **

Exposed: A NovelExposed: A Novel by Ashley Weis

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A little heavy on the religious aspects (mainly concerning the MC and her marriage) for my tastes, but over all a decent book showing how things work out the way they are supposed to, and not how you think you want things to go…

Book Review – Witch Way Bends by Olivia Hardin

Witch Way Bends (Bend-Bite-Shift Trilogy, #1)Witch Way Bends by Olivia Hardin

My rating: 3.5 of 5 stars

Overall a decent read. I spent a little too much time at the beginning trying to figure out what was going on, since the story starts rather abruptly. (I know, I know… hook the reader and all that.) Maybe there was too many things going on and not enough time to process anything from the start.

I did like the characters, but at times they felt a little younger than I think they were supposed to. The premise of the novel is intriguing, but I felt the ending conflict was done a little too easy, or something.

The writing was good and the story line fairly unique, so I am still interested to see where the series heads though!

Book Review – Me and My Ghoulfriends by Rose Pressey

Me and My Ghoulfriends (Larue Donavan #1)Me and My Ghoulfriends by Rose Pressey

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Interesting “light” paranormal about a woman who can see and talk to ghosts– and owns a bookstore, the hot new business owner next door, and the *itch that owns the clothing store across the street.

As with the other books by Pressey that I’ve read, her humor and ability to give us quirky, realistic characters is what makes the books. The plotting in this book was fine (if though a little obvious)but the sparkle is in the people.

I’ll read more of the series for sure.

Book Review – Something Witchy This Way Comes by HP Mallory

Something Witchy This Way Comes (Jolie Wilkins, #5)Something Witchy This Way Comes by H.P. Mallory

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I’m a huge fan of HP Mallory’s. Not only does she invent such quirky characters, but she has a way of making me divide my loyalties when it comes to who the main character, Jolie, should end up with (in my opinion.) And her creative plot lines are so much fun to immerse myself in and drown out the daily sorking-stiff boredom.

That said, I found this latest installment in the series a bit of a departure from the “norm” of things. I don’t want to give away any of the plotting, but I’ll just say that this book is more focused on Jolie (independent of the whole Rand/ Sinjin thing) and that took some getting used to. Like I said earlier, I am soooo on the fence about which guy is the *right* one for her that I crave move screen time with each of them.

Something Witchy also reveals a few big surprises that will forever alter Jolie’s path, so if you haven’t picked up your copy of this novel yet hurry up and do so! I’ve been waiting for the release for months just so I could discuss!

Something Witchy This Way Comes is being released today in ebook format! Hop on over an pick up your copy now 🙂

Kill Me’s Appearance on VampChix & Bite Club

Doh! I completely spaced on telling everyone that my book Kill Me made an appearance over on the wildly popular blog VampChix & Bite Club.

Honestly, this summer is kicking my tail.

Between my other job as a Photographer (wedding and Senior portrai season!), kids, baseball, helping my sis plan her wedding, writing, prepping for back to school… well, you get the picture. I’m uber-busy.

Which is why I’m so thankful for other blogs that read, review or even post about my books. Nothing like web copy that I don’t have to do a thing for!
